Man and van
Man and van in Ashford, for the smaller jobs
Not everything needs a crew of four and a Luton. A room, a studio, a sofa that has to go up a narrow terrace staircase — that is a driver, a van, and someone who will actually carry it.
Man and van is the most abused phrase in the moving trade. A fair number of the people advertising it will drive a van to your address and stand beside it while you load. We do not work that way — if you book a man and van with us, the man carries. That is the whole reason you are paying for a person as well as a vehicle.
It is deliberately lighter than a full removal: a shorter booking, a van sized to the load, and one or two people depending on what you have told us about the stairs.
The sort of thing we get called for
- A room out of a shared house in the town centre
- A studio or one-bed moving across Kennington or Willesborough
- A sofa collected from a showroom and carried up rather than left in the hall
- A marketplace pickup that turned out much heavier than the listing suggested
- A few pieces going into storage while a room is redecorated
- An auction lot that has to be cleared by the end of the week
- Clearing a rental back to empty for the check-out
- Taking three pieces to a relative at Wye and bringing two back
One person or two — get this right
The question people most often answer wrong, usually to save money and usually costing themselves time.
A single driver is fine for a ground-floor collection or a load that is mostly boxes. The moment there are two flights of Victorian stairs off Beaver Road and a two-seater sofa, one person is not a service — it is an injury waiting to happen and a booking that overruns.
So tell us the floor and the heaviest single item when you get in touch. We would far rather send two people and finish early.
Where the van can stop
Kennington and Willesborough are the easy end — drives, side roads, room to work — and a good share of this work sits there. The town centre is harder: a one-way system, restricted waiting, and terraced streets where the parked cars have already won by eight in the morning.
Out in the villages the constraint changes shape. A lane to a cottage at Brook or Westwell may simply be too narrow for the vehicle we would otherwise send, and that is a decision made before the day rather than at the gate.
Collections and deliveries
A decent share of this work is not a move at all — a sofa from a showroom, a table bought secondhand two counties away, an auction lot with a collection deadline. We need the collection address, whoever is releasing the item, and any reference number they will ask for at the door.
What we will not do is take rubbish away. Waste removal needs a carrier licence and operating without one is an offence rather than a technicality. If what you need is a clearance rather than a move, we will say so and point you somewhere licensed.
Small jobs into storage
One of the more useful things we do, and unusual for a man-and-van service: a handful of pieces collected, sealed and stored while a room is redecorated or a house is on the market, then brought back when you say. It saves shuffling furniture between rooms for months.
If the load is a whole house, you want house removals instead. Describe what you have got and we will tell you which you are.
Good to know
Small moves, straight answers
Does the driver help carry?
They carry. That is the entire reason you are paying for a person as well as a vehicle. Plenty of outfits advertising man and van will drive to your address and watch you load it — we do not work that way.
One person or two?
One is fine for a ground-floor collection or a load that is mostly boxes. The moment there are stairs in a town-centre terrace and a two-seater sofa, one person stops being a service. Tell us the floor and the heaviest single item when you book.
Can you collect from a shop, warehouse or auction?
Yes — showroom furniture, marketplace pickups, auction lots. We need the collection address, whoever is releasing the item, and any reference number they will ask for at the door.
Do you cover the villages for small jobs?
Yes, though the run out to Charing, Wye or the Tenterden end is part of the booking rather than free. Kennington and Willesborough are where most of this work sits and they are quick to reach.
Can you move a few things into storage rather than a full household?
Very common, and one of the more useful things we do. A handful of pieces collected, sealed and stored while a room is redecorated or a house is on the market, then brought back when you say.
Describe the load and we'll tell you what it needs.
The floor, whether there are stairs, and the heaviest thing in it. Usually enough for us to come back with a figure.
